A really warm welcome to the New English students here at Magdalene.
All the Fellows join me in wishing you a very happy and successful career.
It is the role of the College to enable you to be the best you can be intellectually, to respect your existing ideas and yet to challenge them, and above all to offer you resources and opportunities to think at a high level about things that matter — whether that is in the context of our formal teaching arrangements or within the wider community of Magdalene. We are sure you will all thrive in this environment.
OK: here is some pedestrian but nevertheless sage advice — get a diary (physical or digital) and add appointments as soon as you are notified.
And the other piece of advice is to remember that you have the entire term/year ahead of you — it isn’t necessary to have the whole University experience in the first few days! Interesting new friends, sports teams, societies, bars and even (for what they are worth) Cambridge nightclubs will still be there in the future. Spend some substantial time each day working on your course however much else is going on. We have a fantastic selection of lectures , classes and supervisions lined up for you, so hit the ground running and make the most of them.
And above all, enjoy the course! The very best of luck to all of you from all of us in Magdalene “Team English”!

Welcome to the College from the Library staff! We’ve put together a guide to getting started (including wifi, printing, and finding library resources) which can be found on our blog: https://magdlibs.wordpress.com/2015/10/02/getting-started-2/ The comment wall in the library foyer is also filling up with advice and words of wisdom from other students. We look forward to meeting you on Tuesday afternoon for your induction tour!
